The annual list celebrates the best pub grub in the UK

Top Yorkshire food pubs The Star in Harome, The Pipe and Glass in South Dalton and The Angel at Hetton all made it onto a list of the UK’s Top 50 gastropubs, sponsored by Estrella Damm.

Andrew Pern’s Michelin-starred The Star Inn at Harome, on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, was placed at number four this year. The twenty-year-old pub has crept steadily up the annual list, coming in fifth in 2015, third in 2016, peaking at first place in 2017.

As well as owning the picturesque thatched pub, Pern’s other venues include thriving bistro the Star in the City and his recently opened Mr P’s Curious Tavern in York.

Michelin-starred The Pipe and Glass Inn, owned and run by James and Kate Mackenzie also made the top ten. It was placed ninth, earning praise for its generous portions, mammoth wine list, locally sourced ingredients and refined take on traditional pub classics.

Just squeezing into the list at number 50 is The Angel at Hetton near Skipton, which some might argue was the UK’s very first gastropub. Last summer it was taken over by acclaimed chef Michael Wignall, who claimed it as his “most exciting venture to date”.

The former Gidleigh Park executive chef and his wife Johanna partnered with James and Jo Wellock (who run the £55m-turnover family-owned produce business) to take on the Angel Inn in North Yorkshire.

Wignall previously headed up the kitchens at Latymer at Pennyhill Park in Bagshot, Surrey, helping to secure its two Michelin stars. We wouldn’t be surprised if next year The Angel lands a much less precarious position on the list of Top 50 Gastropubs. Work has already begun on The Cove, a contemporary steel and glass extension to The Angel's dining room which will open later in 2019.

The number one spot was given to Michelin-starred Sportsman at Seasalter in Kent, which topped the list for the fourth time. Second place went to Tom Kerridge’s The Coach in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, while Lancashire’s Freemasons at Wiswell claimed third position.
